With the introduction of the PerioLase® MVP-7™and the LANAP® protocol (Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure) we are able to remove and kill only the bacteria within the pockets of your gums while leaving the healthy tissue behind to reattach to the root surface! Why is this important? You can now enjoy less pain, less discomfort, less recession, less sensitivity, and much better and more predictable long-term results. LEARN MORE>
It is important to know that your doctor is keeping up with the constant and rapid advancements in modern technology. Digital x-rays are just one more advantage you will have at your disposal when you visit our office. Instead of using a conventional film, we use a special computer sensor which puts the x-ray picture directly into the computer and which allows us to reduce the amount of harmful radiation by nearly 90%. Since the pictures are in the computer, we can enhance the images to better diagnose conditions--often before they become problems. This proves to be much more convenient for you because the x-rays can then be displayed on the computer right in front of you!
DentalVibe® is a cordless, hand held device that delivers soothing, pulsed percussive micro-oscillations to the injection site. VibraPulse® technology gently stimulates the sensory receptors where the injection is being administered and blocks the pain of injections, effectively closing the neural pain gate. The vibrations block the sensation of pain so that when a shot is administered, you don’t feel it!

DentalVibe® is a patented, award-winning device that was invented by dentists to help make dental procedures more comfortable. DentalVibe® is gentle, fast, and safe. And, because there are no pills to take and no gas to inhale, there are no drowsy after-effects to worry about.

Piezosurgery is a recently developed system for cutting bone without damaging soft tissue using ultrasonic micro-vibrations. Developed for use in Oral Surgery, Implantology, and Periodontics, this innovative technology allows doctors to perform procedures that were not previously possible.

Traditional methods of bone-cutting (i.e.: drills and burs) can result in some tissue and bone loss no matter how careful and precise the doctor may be. Piezosurgery eliminates this risk. Instead of drilling, Piezosurgery uses ultrasonic vibrations produced by a special surgical instrument to achieve unparalleled precision and patient comfort.

The doctor is able to perform procedures such as extractions, crown lengthening, periodontal therapy, and implant site preparation with increased accuracy and minimal discomfort. Leading doctors across the country are achieving consistently positive results using Piezosurgery. Patients are seeing amazing results with faster healing time, less swelling, and less post-operative pain!
Many patients struggle to understand why they need complicated dental procedures when they aren't experiencing any pain or see no visual evidence that the procedure is needed. Intraoral cameras allow patients to see the state of their mouths in real-time rather than being shown difficult-to-understand x-rays or listening to the explanation of the dentist. Instead, patients can see the doctor's diagnosis with their own eyes.

Intraoral cameras are roughly the same size as a pen and are fitted with a camera and light. The camera then transmits the images to a computer screen or television monitor. You'll be able to see right away a fractured tooth, abscess, or cavity. In the case of the intraoral camera, a picture may be worth more than a thousand words!
Approximately 36,540 Americans will be diagnosed with cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx in 2010. During the same time period 7,880 Americans will die of oral cancer. One of the VELscope® system's most important tasks is to help identify areas that might, if not identified and treated, progress to oral cancer. The VELscope® system is designed to help dentist recognize oral abnormalities found on the lips, mouth, and uppper throat. In just two minutes, with no rinses, stains or discomfort, a VELscope® examination allows dentist to improve their assessment of your overall oral health.

The VELscope® uses a safe blue light and fluorescence technology to show differences between normal and abnormal tissues in the mouth. Looking through a special lens, dentists can detect changes several cell layers deep in the early stages that frequently can not be seen by the naked eye.
Tekscan, or T-Scan, is a valuable tool that aids in diagnosing problems with a person’s bite. The T-Scan system can show what is and what is not functioning properly when a person bites down. When a bite is unstable it can cause pain, broken restorations, gum disease, tooth loss, headaches, and TMJ disorder.

The T-Scan device includes an ultra-thin sensor that a patient bites down on. The computer then analyzes and displays the data. Because the sensor technology is so advanced, the T-Scan can detect both biting time and force. This will allow your doctor to correct any bite issues without the guesswork previously needed and reduce the number of office visits you will need to have your occlusion (bite) corrected.
Oral DNA® testing allows us to know exactly what kinds of bacteria are present in the mouths of our patients. This information allows us to predict how susceptible a patient may be to certain kinds of periodontal disease and tooth decay. It also allows us to treat the mouth before certain types of bacteria are able to cause serious, permanent damage.

Certain types of bacteria are dangerous and destructive and, without treatment, can cause severe periodontal disease. And, in many cases, these bacteria are present in the mouths of patients who cannot seem to get rid of their chronic gum disease. With Oral DNA® we are now able to identify these harmful bacteria and treat the whole mouth using a specific antibiotic treatment.

Oral DNA® testing is simple and easy. A gentle oral rinse procedure is performed by swishing a small amount of sterile solution throughout the mouth. The entire process takes about 30 seconds and is then sent to Oral DNA® Labs for testing. The lab report we receive back identifies the bacteria found in the mouth and the quantities in which they are found. This allows us to develop a more powerful and effective treatment plan that is designed specifically for your mouth!
Spots on teeth can result form a number of causes including accident, trauma, developmental abnormalities, braces, tooth decay, medications, smoking, and to much fluoride in the water. Removing these stains can be difficult and teeth whitening or bleaching may not be effective.

Microabrasion is a quick and painless solution for removing yellow, white, or brown spots, stains, and discolorations on the teeth. This procedure uses hydrochloric acid and pumice to gently remove thin layers of tooth enamel, removing the stains.
MI Paste Plus™ is the only product for professional use with a special milk-derived phosphopeptide called RECALDENT™ (CPP-ACP) that is designed to bind calcium and phosphate to tooth surfaces, plaque, and the surrounding soft tissues. The paste is designed to protect teeth from caries development and has been found to be more effective than fluoride treatments alone.

MI Paste Plus™ is also used to reduce or eliminate white spots on teeth. It works by helping the teeth remineralize the white areas and, as a result, the white spots disappear. It also helps to reduce sensitivity to hot or cold liquids or foods. The paste also reduces acidity in the saliva by reducing the ability of bacteria to cause decay. And, MI Paste Plus™ decreases the effect of acid reflux on the teeth.
It is always important to detect and treat cavities as early as possible. However, detecting cavities using only visual, probing, and x-ray clues has proven to be only 50-75% accurate. Because cavities can hide along fissure lines or inside biting or occlusal surfaces, detecting them early can be challenging. Additionally, probing by the dentist has also been proven ineffective, as the cavity would have to be as large as the probe head in order to be found.

DIAGNOdent is a revolutionary way to detect and find cavities. DIAGNOdent uses a laser diode to inspect the patient’s teeth. The light-emitting device is shined on the teeth and then gives a digital readout the dentist is able to use to detect decay. In fact, the DIAGNOdent laser is able to identify the tiniest bit of tooth decay before it becomes a major problem. Detecting decay early means that fillings can be shallower and simpler and more of the tooth structure can be preserved. And, because DIAGNOdent uses only light energy, not x-rays, it’s safe to use at each office visit.
Dental cavities are caused by bacterial infections known in the dental profession as “carries”. Infections occur when normal, healthy bacteria in the mouth are replaced by acid-producing bacteria. This shift in bacteria is usually caused by lack of saliva, a sugary/acidic diet, or transmission through saliva.

Caries are not only treatable but also preventable. The CariFree® Prevention system treats the infection causing bacteria before tooth decay occurs. In order to determine if caries are present in the mouth, a one-minute CariScreen test is performed using a simple cotton swab to gather a specimen from two teeth. The CariScreen® test then determines the level of decay-causing bacteria: low, moderate, or high risk.

The CariFree® treatment consists of a series of CariFree® antibacterial mouth rinses to reduce the bacterial levels on the teeth. There are two types of rinses: the CariFree® Treatment Rinse and the CariFree® Maintenance Rinse. The CariFree® Treatment Rise kills the harmful bacteria on the teeth. The CariFree® Maintenance Rinse is designed to develop an environment in the mouth, which prevents the destructive bacteria from re-establishing itself. Removing the harmful bacteria and maintaining a bacteria free mouth greatly reduces the risk of future dental decay.
Instead of using a drill to remove tooth decay or cavities, air abrasion uses instead a tool that works like a mini sandblaster. The instrument is designed to spray a fine stream of particles, made of silica, aluminum oxide, or a baking soda mixture, at the decay. These particles are compressed into a gas that is run through the handpiece. As the particles hit the tooth surface, they gently remove the small particles of decay on the tooth surface and the particles are suctioned away.

Dr. Kim is Dedicated to Green Dentistry. According to the Keep America Beautiful website, Americans generate 250 million tons of garbage per year, and since 1960, the amount of waste generated in the US has nearly tripled. Waste is one of our countries biggest issues and dental offices are a large contributor to the problem. Many of the supplies dental offices use is used one time and then thrown away for sanitary purposes. The items that are the big contributers from our offices include:

-Infection control methods including disposable barriers (gloves) and sterilization items and toxic disinfectant
-Placement and removal of mercury-containing dental material
-Conventional x-ray systems
-Conventional vacuum systems

New products and technologies for cleaner, greener dental practices are emerging, allowing practitioners to mediate, or completely eliminate, much of this waste. In many cases, the eco-friendly alternative better serves patient health and saves the practice money. Dr. Kim is dedicated to the EcoDentistry movement because he believes in helping to protect the environment, reduce waste and pollution, and supports healthy living for his valued patients.

Adults seeking orthodontics have several reasons for treatment: malocclusion (or crooked teeth), to improve ones’ smile and to stop periodontal diseases from progressing, to list a few. Once a patient has committed to orthodontic treatment, the next step is to determine candidacy for the clear aligners therapy and the length of time for treatment to complete. On average, aligners are worn for 22 hours every day for 2 weeks to achieve the prescribed movements, before the patient is transitioned into the next set of aligners. This cycle continues for 11 months, on average. Fast forward 11 months when another set of aligners are fabricated for a second round of treatment, known as a refinement. This is when the final prescribed movements occur to reach maximum results. This means that the average patient would be in orthodontics treatment for almost 2 years. However, Propel Orthodontics has created a system which fast-tracks orthodontic treatment and does not require a refinement.

Propel Orthodontics has patients wearing aligners for 22 hours a day, yet aligners are changed every 7-10 days, verses the traditional 2 weeks. A case study of conservative alignment movement from Journal of the American Orthodontic Society, demonstrated how dramatic the results were. A 42 year old woman was estimated to be in treatment for 15 months with 24 aligners and an additional 3 months of refinement. Yet, utilizing Propels’ method, her actual treatment time was cut down to only 9 months and she did not require a refinement.

Propel addresses one major issue in adult orthodontics - the fact that there is no growth or development; the tissue in adults are less biologically active and adaptive. As a result, tooth movement in adults may not only be more uncomfortable but more importantly is there is a slower rate of movement. Propel works with the body’s natural ability to remodel the bone by activating and accelerating the bone regeneration to maximal orthodontic levels. Propel has proven a significant decrease in case time and improved patients’ quality of life, making orthodontics an easier choice for patients. Propel is a new and exciting advancement in orthodontics; by offering this treatment option there are infinite positive possibilities for patients.

Today’s dental field has vastly grown in terms of its ability to contribute to a patient’s overall medicinal health, specifically the advancement in treating sleep apnea. Dr. Kim is one of few dentists in Northern Virginia to be partnering with sleep local labs, technicians, and physicians, to provide cutting edge sleep researchers to improve the treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

Our research and development is led by Zephyr sleep technology, whose focus is on improving the efficacy of Oral Appliance Therapy (OAT) to address the needs of OSA patients who are dissatisfied or non-compliant with CPAP treatment. Dr. Kim and affiliating physicians strongly believe patients should have alternative solutions, one of which comes from the latest technological advancements when treating OSA.

Zephyr developed MATRx, the only remote-controlled medical device designed to perform mandibular titration during polysomnography. Polysomnography is a comprehensive recording of the biophysiological changes that occur during sleep. MATRx unique and personalized oral appliance therapy is focused on patient-centered care; it improves confidence and the therapeutic outcomes of an OAT. MATRx allows sleep dentists and physicians to accurately determine which patients will respond to oral appliance therapy and if they can be effectively treated without the use of the traditional and cumbersome CPAP. MATRx also determines the target protrusion for each OAT responder allowing Dr. Kim to provide efficient, effective treatment when fitting their OSA patients with an oral appliance.

MATRx is an FDA-cleared product, and the first of its kind! There is a correlation with increasing obesity rates and sleep apnea, thus there is need for alternative treatments. By partnering with local physicians and sleep labs, Dr. Kim continues to be on the cutting edge of dentistry; providing patients only with the best care. Ballston Dental Arts is proud to offer our patients this elite treatment, being one of only a handful of dentist utilizing the breakthrough MATRx technology. LEARN MORE >

The TruDenta™ exam includes two unique, patented technologies, which within five minutes can provide the doctor with important information about the causes of the symptoms.

The first device measures the opening and closing of the mouth and bite forces within the head, neck, and jaw. Once the scan is completed, a digital bite force analysis is provided which allows the doctor to analyze the forces on each tooth. The second device measures the range of motion within the head and neck. The device then mathematically calculates a patient’s deviance form normal motion.

After your doctor finishes the exam, the doctor may prescribe a treatment program specifically designed to meet each individual patients’ needs. This may be a program of therapy and rehabilitation that is designed to lead to lasting symptom relief. TruDenta™ treatments are always needle and drug free. A trained specialist within the office usually performs treatments. The TruDenta™ system uses technologies and techniques originally designed for sports medicine rehabilitation. Treatments usually last about 50 minutes and many patients feel immediate relief. Depending on the severity of the diagnosis, patients may need one to twelve treatments to get full treatment relief.
