It is recommended by the American Dental Association that cleaning one’s teeth and gums daily help prevent cavities and gum disease. Cleaning your pearly whites with a toothbrush is effective at removing oral debris and dental plaque but it isn’t ideally suited to clean between the teeth and around the gumline.
That is why you need to floss those areas, and finding a flossing method you like helps you maintain the daily habit. This is vital because unless you get rid of the sticky biofilm, or plaque, regularly, the bacteria feed on the sugar and food particles produce acids which erode tooth enamel. This puts you at a higher risk of cavities and gingivitis, the early stage of gum disease.
Unfortunately, finding a flossing method that works for you can be a challenge. For those people who aren’t happy with their current method–and thereby avoid flossing–we recommend using a water flosser. This handheld dental tool emits a pulsing stream of water that easily reaches food particles and oral debris between teeth and gumline. These are also helpful for those wearing braces or have a fixed dental bridge.
Be sure to look for products that carry the ADA Seal of Acceptance on it which are proven to work safely and effectively. Remember to brush twice a day, floss once, and see your dentist every six months for a healthier smile.
